Now I'm no Mrs Beeton myself but honestly? This is just plain shoddy. It looks like the whole thing could be blown down in the next storm. So what kind of bird would risk its chicks in a nest like this?
Well, the short answer is that no bird would. This is actually a squirrels nest, or drey. The big clue is that it is made up of leaves which birds would not normally use.https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2020/06/squirrel-nests/
It can get a bit confusing because sometimes birds take over squirrels nests and vice versa. This nest/drey is in the field next to Charlotte's Pool so I will keep an eye on it. If it has got baby aquirrels in it, they should be venturing out in April.
Oh, and apparently, although it might look a mess on the outside, it will be nice and warm and cosy inside.
